Flash Flood Warning Issued for St. John Until 11:15 a.m.

Thursday, January 10, 2013 – 8:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for St. John the Baptist Parish until 11:15 a.m. as a severe thunderstorm moves through the area.  A chance of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected today and tonight with the greatest threat being heavy rainfall.  As a result of already saturated grounds, any additional rainfall will quickly runoff and contribute to street flooding and potentially flash flooding in low-lying areas.  The Parish remains under a tornado watch until 2 p.m. and also a Coastal Flood Advisory through Thursday.

Residents are asked to continue removing any debris from catch basins and storm drains during breaks in rain events to assist with drainage due to anticipated heavy rains through Thursday. Please avoid placing debris in ditches, drainage canals, and on the side of the road that may impede drainage or become projectiles. Residents should use caution when going outside and when on roads.  Please refrain from driving in flooded streets if possible.

The St. John Parish Emergency Operations is monitoring the weather forecast for any changes. The Public Works and Utilities Departments are prepared for the weather event and are on call in the event problems occur.  Residents should report any issues or concerns during the rain event to 9-1-1.

Please stay tuned to local weather stations for weather updates and changes in the forecast.  Please also sign up to receive emergency notifications to your home phone, cell phone, email or SMS text messaging device. Residents may sign up for the service by visiting the homepage of the Parish’s website at www.sjbparish.com and clicking on the FirstCall-Interactive Network link.
