ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – As Tropical Storm Isaac moves through the region, the National Hurricane Center has issued a Flash Flood Watch for St. John the Baptist Parish from 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning through 7:00 p.m. Wednesday morning as a result of widespread heavy rain in addition to the Hurricane Warning. Approximately 10 to 15 inches of rainfall can be expected over a 36 hour period with up to 20 inches possible.
With already saturated grounds, drainage systems may get overwhelmed during this heavy rain resulting in rapid runoff and street flooding. Low-lying areas remain under a voluntary evacuation; however, no mandatory evacuations are in effect at this time for St. John the Baptist Parish. Residents are encouraged to finalize all plans by this evening and are asked to dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. The St. John Parish Emergency Operations Center will be open 24/7 accepting phone calls. If drainage issues become an emergency please call 985-652-2222 or 9-1-1.
