Tropical Storm Isaac: Hurricane Warning Remains in Effect for St. John Parish

Monday, August 27, 2012 - 6:30 a.m.

Based on the National Hurricane Center’s latest update at 4:00 a.m., Tropical Strom Isaac still shows little change; however a slight westward shift occurred over night, and will continue in this path. St. John the Baptist Parish remains under a Hurricane Warning.

Tropical Storm Isaac is continuing its forward movement at 14 mph moving west northwest. It is projected to most likely make landfall as a Category Two hurricane near the southeast pass of the Mississippi River Tuesday night.

Anticipated storm surge levels currently remain at 5 to 8 feet for areas on the western shore of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. Tides are expecting to begin rising beginning Tuesday with expectations of reaching peak levels on Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and possibly higher gusts can be expected beginning later today. Currently, a total rainfall of 6 to 12 inches is possible in Southeast Louisiana which includes St. John the Baptist Parish.

There is no plan for a mandatory evacuation; however residents are encouraged to finalize emergency plans and preparations to shelter at home. Residents may also choose to evacuate to areas to the north and west of the parish. All public, private, and parochial schools and the South Central La Technical College are closed until further notice.

All Parish Government Offices will be open today. The St. John Parish Emergency Operations Center is partially activated and accepting phone calls at 985-652-2222. Residents are asked to dial 9-1-1 for emergencies or critical information. Garbage service will continue on the normal pick-up schedule; however, changes will be post on the Parish website.

Public Works and Utilities crews have prepared all pumps, lift stations, water tanks, and facilities in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. today sand and bags will be available at the following locations:

Fire Station #53 at 1703 St. Andrews Blvd. in LaPlace
Fire Station #94 at 1200 Hwy. 643 in Pleasure Bend
Fire Station #65 located at 337 Central Avenue in Reserve
Fire Station #71 at 418 Historic West St. in Garyville
Old Second Ward High School at 3671 Highway 18 in Edgard
***Residents are asked to bring a shovel to fill their bags.***
