Based on the National Hurricane Center’s latest update at 10:00 p.m., little change has been noted with Tropical Storm Isaac. St. John the Baptist Parish remains under a Hurricane Warning.
Tropical Storm Isaac has decreased its forward speed from 16 to 14 mph moving west northwest. It is projected to most likely make landfall as a Category Two hurricane near the southeast pass of the Mississippi River Tuesday night.
Anticipated storm surge levels have increased to 5 to 7 feet for areas on the western shore of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and possibly higher gusts. Currently, 4-8 inches of rainfall is being predicted beginning Tuesday.
There is no plan for a mandatory evacuation; however residents are encouraged to finalize emergency plans and preparations to shelter at home. They may also choose to evacuate to areas to the north and west of the parish. All public, private, and parochial schools and the South Central Louisiana Technical College are closed until further notice.
All Parish Government Offices will be open tomorrow until further notice. The St. John Parish Emergency Operations Center is currently closed; however, residents can call 985-652-2222 beginning at 7:00 a.m. Monday morning. Residents are asked to dial 9-1-1 for emergencies or critical information. Garbage service will continue on the normal pick-up schedule until further notice; however, if necessary, route changes will be posted on the Parish website.
Public Works and Utilities crews have prepared all pumps, lift stations, water tanks, and facilities in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac. Additional preparation will resume Monday morning. Sandbag locations are currently closed; however, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 27 sand and bags will be available at the following locations:
Fire Station #53 at 1703 St. Andrews Blvd. in LaPlace
Fire Station #94 at 1200 Hwy. 643 in Pleasure Bend
Fire Station #65 located at 337 Central Avenue in Reserve
Fire Station #71 at 418 Historic West St. in Garyville
Old Second Ward High School at 3671 Highway 18 in Edgard
