ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – On Saturday, August 4, 2012, Parish President Natalie Robottom, Torri Buckles, Economic Development Director, Joey Scontrino, owner of Landcraft Homes, and Terry Rhoton, Jr. of Whitney Bank joined Jonathan and Dr. Sheletta Williams and a host of family and friends for the grand opening of Abilities First, Inc.  Abilities First, Inc. offers habilitation services for adults over the age of 22 with a wide range of disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, and language and cognitive impairments. “After doing extensive research on this subject, I discovered that St. John Parish was very much in need of these types of services. Our caregivers and trained staff of professionals will work together to maintain the clients’ quality of life every day,” said Dr. Sheletta Williams.

The new facility offers a variety of activities such as water aerobics, basketball, volleyball, gardening, music therapy, and creative arts.  While at the clinic, clients are also instructed in computer skills, social interaction and relationship building, community awareness, and cooking skills. The enrollment process is handled by a client support coordinator, physician, family member or caretaker.  “Abilities First, Inc. is very important to us because we want everyone to have the best quality of life possible,” said Jonathan Williams. “We offer employment opportunities, respite for families and caregivers, and most importantly dignity to our citizens with developmental disabilities.”

“I would like to congratulate Abilities First, Inc. on opening its doors to residents of St. John Parish,” said Parish President Natalie Robottom. “We welcome them and encourage a close working relationship with parish officials and other support entities throughout the parish.  We wish them great success with their newest endeavor.”

Mr. and Mrs. Williams also own Garden of Eden Christian Academy, a daycare facility for children 6 weeks to 12 years old, located next to Abilities First, Inc. on Hwy 51 in LaPlace.
