Parish President Natalie Robottom and Chief Administrative Officer, Theresa Rodgers, joined approximately 470 seniors from St.
John, St. Charles and St. James Parishes at the 35th Annual River Parishes Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Luncheon on Thursday, June 28 at Regala Gymnasium in Reserve.
Once a year, the RSVP sponsors a recognition event to acknowledge the senior’s volunteer efforts. Awards were presented to volunteers with five to twenty-five years of service. Among the top St. John volunteers were Ruby Anders and Betty Vicknair who were recognized for 25 plus years of volunteer service. Overall, RSVP had 704 volunteers with 130,065 hours of service from January to December of 2011. In 2012, this group has already clocked in 54,032 hours of service. “This is an outstanding program for our retirees and seniors. They serve as models in our community for volunteerism by giving their time to help others and their parish,” said Parish President Natalie Robottom.
In addition to the presentation of awards, volunteers also reveled in music, dancing, socializing, and entertainment by the “Oldies but Goodies 310 Wobblers”. “This was the first year the RSVP luncheon in was held in St. John the Baptist Parish and it was a huge success. Regala Gym was a fantastic venue, and we had a great turnout from our volunteers,” said Fay Caire, RSVP Program Director.
The purpose of the River Parishes RSVP is to link adults from St. James, St. Charles and St. John Parishes age 55 and over to meaningful volunteerism and to provide opportunities to pursue their interests and use their skills to help meet community needs. Volunteers serve in a diverse range of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and faith-based groups. Each volunteer contributes an average of four hours per week to remain an active RSVP member.
