St. John Parish Government Receives National Award for Financial Reporting

Friday, June 22, 2012

The St. John the Baptist Parish Finance Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the ninth consecutive year.  This award was presented by Diane Allison, a member of the Board of Directors of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of Louisiana based on its review of a comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. Finance manager, Vince Lucia expressed his gratitude for the department’s endless hard work, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all members of the Finance Department and Administration for continuing to be focused on planning and conducting the operations of the Parish.” During Allison’s presentation, she put the significance of the award into perspective by breaking it down into numbers, “there are 87,000 governments in the United States and Canada; less than 4,000, or the top 4%, of all of those governments, earn the award. In Louisiana only 48 of about 4,000 governments earned the award in 2010. Of those 48, nine were parishes, which places St. John the Baptist Parish in the top 13% of parishes in the state; 1% of all governments in the state; and 4% of all governments in the United States and Canada, quite an accomplishment. To retain that high level of achievement for nine years is truly commendable.”

The CAFR is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” clearly communicating its financial story and motivating potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.  The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL, and Washington D.C. “I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of the Finance Department and applaud them for their outstanding work year after year.  The parish’s financial standing remains a top priority for my administration and this award confirms that we are on the right track,” said Parish President Natalie Robottom.
