Mississippi River Update 5
Saturday, May 14, 2011 - 9:00 p.m.
Since the opening of the Morganza Spillway at 3:00 p.m. today, the National Weather Service's forecast for the Mississippi River has changed in Reserve. This evening the current forecast shows the Mississippi River at the Reserve gauge beginning to crest at 23.8 feet.
The models and forecast show the river maintaining this same level for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. St. John the Baptist Parish Officials are continuing to monitor the river levles and communicate with the Pontchartrain Levee District, the Lafourche Basin Levee District, and the U.S. Corps of Engineers to ensure no changes occur.
Restrictions for the Mississippi River are still in effect until further notice.
- No digging activity and/or subsurface work of any kind is allowed within 1,500 feet of the levee centerline. This includes, but is not limited to pile driving, excavation and trenching.
- Driving on the river levees is prohibited.
- Biking and walking on the levee are discouraged at this time due to safety concerns.
