Splash Park Opens at West Bank Recreational Complex

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

St. John the Baptist Parish - Parish President Robottom joined Parks & Recreation and Administrative staff, Council members and residents to cut the ribbon for the official opening of the new Spray Park at the Juan Anthony Joseph Memorial Park (West Bank Recreational Complex) in Edgard.

The project was constructed by Francise Horticulture Services, Inc. at a total cost of $99,000.  This is the third spray park opened under Robottom’s Administration and the first on the west bank. The other spray parks are located at the Thomas F. Daley Memorial Park (Highway 51 in LaPlace) and REGALA Park in Reserve. The spray parks compliment parish swimming pools on both banks of the river at no charge to residents.

“We’re thrilled to open the new splash park on the West Bank adding to the existing baseball complex, airnasium, walking path and playground.  The Senior Citizens Home is also co-located on the complex,” said Parish President Robottom. “This will be a great addition to the community, especially during hot summer months.  We encourage our residents to take advantage of the amenities at all of our parks parishwide this summer.”

The spray park comes in addition to $2.8 million in park improvements and $1.9 million in biking and walking trails completed in 2016. Other improvements included spray parks, a dog park, new play sets, gazebos, fitness stations, restroom facilities, benches, concession stands, parking lot improvements and other aesthetic upgrades funded through the 2014 bond issue. There are also plans to add a fence around the spray park.

“This splash park will not only provide a great escape from the heat, but will also give our kids on the Westbank endless hours of outdoor fun in addition to the swimming pool on Castle Drive,” said Park and Recreation Director Kerry Watkins.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  The spray park will be closed on Mondays for maintenance.

“We also want to encourage residents to assist us with keeping the parks clean and free of vandalism.  If you see something, say something. Please report all suspicious activity to the Recreation Department at 985-652-9569,” said Robottom.
