St. John the Baptist Parish – On Saturday, June 3, 2017, St. John the Baptist Parish experienced parish-wide heavy rainfall and street flooding in the afternoon hours. Although there is a break in the rainfall currently, the region remains under a threat of severe weather through Tuesday with the possibility of additional severe storms in St. John.
Within two hours on highly saturated grounds and overloaded canals, the National Weather Service confirms that more than 4 inches of rainfall was recorded in LaPlace on Saturday. In a short period of time, significant amounts of rainfall caused ponding of water and major street and yard flooding in many areas as systems worked to keep up with the torrential downpour.
Most street flooding has subsided, however Parish Utility and Drainage systems remain inundated and will continue to need time to catch up. Due to overloaded systems coupled with saturated grounds and the possibility of one to three more inches of rainfall, additional street and flash flooding could occur. Public Works and Utilities crews are out assessing problem areas throughout the parish and will remain on standby should other pop-up storms occur. In addition, weather-related action items were recorded through the Emergency Operations Center from the weekend and will be addressed with the appropriate departments beginning tomorrow. Your assistance is needed in addressing issues with blocked catch basins or drains within your area.
Reminder - Residents should call 9-1-1 directly to report any street flooding or weather concerns to allow for proper dispatch of Parish employees in a timely fashion. Motorists should stay off of the roads and never drive through flooded streets. In addition, vehicles in low-lying roadways should be moved to higher ground during heavy rain storms. With regard to construction sites, site superintendents are being contacted by parish staff to secure their sites prior to weather events and be prepared to address problem areas should it be necessary.
St. John the Baptist Parish officials remain in close communications with the National Weather Center and will continue to work throughout the weather event to address problems as they arise.
