ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – To kick off the 2015 Spring Clean Sweep, Parish Officials and the Clean Sweep Committee held a dedication renaming Hwy 51 Park as the Thomas F. Daley Memorial Park. The dedication was in memory of the former District Attorney and anti-littering and community beautification advocate, Tom Daley.
Parish President Natalie Robottom welcomed attendees, including numerous family members and friends of the Daley family and Clean Sweep participants to the ceremony. Monique Daley spoke of her dad’s love for the outdoors and thanked officials for creating a memorial for years to come. “We now have a place to come and remember our dad,” she said. Clean Sweep Committee members Greg “Za” Maurin and Judge Sterling Snowdy also spoke of Mr. Daley’s dedication and love for his community and engaging leadership in St. John.
The St. John Parish Capital Projects staff and Public Works Department designed and managed the landscaping for the memorial, which includes benches and a serene scene for reflection. “Tom was an outstanding public servant and dedicated leader of the Keep St. John Beautiful initiative and the park re-dedication is a true reflection of his life,” said Parish President Natalie Robottom. “We thank the Daley's and all who attended the ceremony in support of Tom's legacy.”
Council Members presented the Daley family with mementos of the dedication. “It was perfectly fitting to honor Tom by renaming the Hwy 51 Park to the Thomas F. Daley Memorial Park as Tom was a runner enthusiast, a promoter of protecting green space and an advocate for keeping St. John clean,” said Jaclyn Hotard, Council Member Division B. “Today was a day that Tom would be proud of and I was honored to be a part of the celebration of his life with his family and friends.”
Michael Wright, Council Member District 5, said "it was truly a great honor to dedicate the Thomas F. Daley Memorial Park with so many of Tom's family and friends present. Our bi-annual clean sweep event went successful as usual. I commend all those involved in coordinating this event."
Following the dedication ceremony, over 300 volunteers including residents, community organizations, government agencies, churches, schools and businesses participated in the Annual Spring Clean Sweep event. The event is organized by St. John Parish Officials and the “Keep St. John Beautiful Committee” to promote beautification and Parish cleanliness.
All participants received garbage bags, gloves, t-shirts, masks and trash clamps upon arrival and were assigned to major thoroughfares throughout the parish for clean-up. The Clean Sweep Committee also encouraged businesses and neighborhood groups to clean in areas where they were located. To celebrate a successful event, volunteers returned to the Park for jambalaya, drinks and music by the band “Changing Times.”
