The St. John the Baptist Parish Economic Development Department partnered with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to host a two-day “Capacity Building & Grant Writing Training” at REGALA Park Gymnasium.
With over 75 participants in attendance, strategies for identifying relevant grant opportunities and utilizing a comprehensive approach to grant writing were provided. The information pertained to federal, state, local, non-governmental, and private sector grants and participants were exposed to the entire grant writing process. Additionally, key concepts such as building relationships with potential funders, effective budgeting strategies, and securing funding were discussed. “The workshop was extremely beneficial to me as it opened my eyes to services that are currently offered in St. John the Baptist Parish. It also highlighted opportunities currently available for the development of new programs for our community,” said Sylvia Dunn.
In an effort to provide information and resources to our region, the training was open to agencies outside of St. John the Baptist Parish. Michelle Octave, St. James Parish CAO, was in attendance and left motivated to bring the information back to her parish. “One of the keys to good business success training is the right motivation and inspiration; this workshop provided ALL of that and more! The resources provided are tools that can definitely help businesses build capacity. I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate and network with key leadership staff and will definitely bring those ideas back to St. James Parish, starting with the Small Business Banquet,” she said.
The Economic Development Department is committed to providing meaningful workshops to residents and business owners and is working toward hosting the next workshop titled “Fundraising 101”. The workshop will be held in June of 2015 and additional information will be forthcoming.
