St. John the Baptist Parish – Members of the St. John Parish Office of Fire Services placed first in the Louisiana State Firemen’s Association 2015 Competitive Drills competition for the second year in a row.
The competition was held in Luling, with St. John Firefighters defeating competitors from across Louisiana to recapture their first place bid. “I congratulate the Fire Department for again prevailing as a team and proving that we are among the best in the state,” said Parish President Robottom. “This is a huge accomplishment and one that is evident through the success of the department.”
Members of the Office of Fire Services participated in vigorous timed events mirroring daily scenarios faced by fire fighters in the line of duty, including hose roll and layout drills, ladder skills, dressing out in personal protective equipment, and search and rescue drills. Firefighters faced 6 different timed evaluations while using only air from the breathing apparatus.
Cain Dufrene, Chief of Operations for St. John Fire, said participating in competitive events encourages fire personnel to discover and train on new fire-fighting strategies to help improve response to real-life situations. “It is through practice drills that we find out what works the best, where mistakes are made, and how to correct mistakes for a real-life event," said Dufrene. “I am extremely proud that our goal of continuing to improve is reflective in this award.”
Team members include: Michael Philpott, Travis Etie, William Parker and Michael Moscona.
