The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee will meet on Wednesday, April 22 to discuss Senate Bill 177 which repeals the inventory
tax and the tax credit provided by the state. If the State Legislature approves this bill, St. John the Baptist Parish will lose $22 million annually, which funds the school system, sheriff's office, parish government and fire protection.
In turn, this would force local parishes to increase millage rates on residential and business property to support existing services and to cover existing debt.
Currently, the State of Louisiana provides a tax credit to industry and businesses based on the amount of inventory taxes paid to local governments. The State is now attempting to repeal the inventory tax and tax credit in an effort to reduce the $1.6 billion deficit in the State's budget; however, this proposal is a threat to local government's ability to sustain itself.
Residents are urged to contact members of the Senate Finance Committee and request their opposition to Senate Bill 177/Adley (SB177) at the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2015.
