St. John Parish Health Fair Provides Community with Important Information

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – More than 150 St. John Parish residents received important health-related information and the opportunity to meet with pharmacists at no cost during the Parish sponsored Health and Wellness Fair. The annual fair was held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 and coordinated by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Director Rhonda Lemons and her staff. Numerous local agencies, medical providers and businesses focused on providing screenings, medical services and education on critical health issues were in attendance.  

Employees from the St. John Health Unit and DHHS provided information on a variety of programs and services offered within the Parish while staff members from Teche Action Clinic administered free body mass index and glucose screenings. Walgreens representatives administered free flu shots and St. Charles Community Health Center administered free blood screenings. Gem Drugs, a local pharmacy, explained the importance of diabetic shoes and other medical supplies, as well as provided pharmacists for free consultations.

Children and family resources were disseminated through Child Advocacy Services, Family Home Care Services, the Metropolitan Center for Women and Children and Bayou Land Families Helping Families. Personnel with the Children’s Hospital Mobile Dental Program demonstrated proper dental hygiene for attendees, including proper techniques of brushing and flossing. Exceptional Behavioral Health provided mental health screenings while South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority held detailed discussions on topics related to mental and behavioral health, abuse, depression screenings and assistance with accessing services for developmental disabilities.

Emergency responders from the Office of Fire Services were on hand to provide fire prevention and CPR safety demonstrations. The firefighters also distributed fire safety materials while attendees enjoyed healthy fruit smoothies provided by Snap Fitness of LaPlace.  Nycole Brown led complimentary Zumba Classes. “We are very appreciative of the sponsors, guest speakers and vendors who supported and participated in the Health & Wellness Event and Meet the Pharmacist Day,” said Lemons.  “The event was a true success and accomplished our goal of delivering useful and diversified health information to our residents.”
