St. John the Baptist Parish - On Saturday, December 6, over 140 St. John Parish youth traveled to Yulman Stadium in New Orleans to participate in River Parish Day at the Tulane Football game. Prior to the game, participants enjoyed the "tailgate village" which included jambalaya, drinks, football tossing, spacewalk play, face painting and more.
The group then joined the Tulane cheerleaders and band as they led the pre-game parade from the tailgate village to the stadium for kickoff. Attendees received t-shirts and mini footballs to take home as a souvenirs. “This was the first time River Parish day was held at the new Tulane stadium and it made for a more enjoyable pre-game atmosphere," said Parish President and avid Tulane supporter, Natalie Robottom. "With nine roster players from the River Parishes, as well as Head Coach Curtis Johnson and Defensive Coordinator Lionel Washington, this event is an opportunity to cheer on local athletes and members of the community who began their careers with youth sports."
Local students and athletes from recreation teams, the Reserve Housing Authority, St. John Jr. Wildcats and various St. John schools including East St. John Elementary, Emily C. Watkins, John L. Ory, and Laplace Elementary attended the game. The Parks and Recreation Department was instrumental in organizing the event for the Parish and obtaining sponsors to assist with the purchase of tickets. “I would like to thank Live Oak Landing, River Oaks and St. Andrews Estates’ Phase II Homeowner Associations, Hymel’s Turf & Landscaping, Game Day and Louisiana Ambassadors for their generous support and sponsorship,” said Acting Parks & Recreation Director Debra Poche.
