ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH - St. John Parish Administration and Economic Development Department, Council Members Marvin Perilloux and Jaclyn Hotard, the River Region Chamber of Commerce and a host of family, friends and restaurant staff joined Chef Avis Lightfoot for a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening on Monday, September 29, 2014 to commemorate the new location of her soul-food eatery, Avis’ Kitchen. The new restaurant is located at 2003 W. Airline Hwy in LaPlace, near Fred’s in the New Wine Complex.
With standing room only, the grand opening and ribbon cutting commenced with an opening prayer from New Wine Reverend Neil Bernard, followed by an uplifting song by Angela Taylor and remarks from Dr. Adrell Pinkney and St. John Parish CAO Randy Vincent. Upon conclusion of the traditional ribbon cutting, Pastor Benjamin Scott provided the closing prayer and blessing of the food. On the menu was Avis’ Monday special, red beans and rice and cornbread, in which she delivered an generous helping for no cost to each attendee.
Through guidance from her grandmother beginning at the age of 6, Avis prides her establishment and cooking techniques on being “homegrown” and “homemade” coupled with a collection of culinary knowledge and original recipes. Avis’ Kitchen is a home-style restaurant offering a variety of soul food dishes, including fried fish, fried chicken, catfish plates, stews, greens and more. Lunch and dinner specials are incorporated in the menu each day and Avis extends her services to party and event catering upon request.
The self-made chef is very active in the community and will be participating in the Andouille Festival this year as a food vendor. She also made it to the top 14 in the reality TV competition and show “Master Chef” in 2012. “Avis’ Kitchen is a family-friendly restaurant with great food and one that my daughter and I often frequent for dinner,” said Councilwoman at Large Division B Jaclyn Hotard. "St. John is truly blessed to have Avis as a business owner and we look forward to her continued success and long-standing future here.”
