In accordance with the Emergency Administrative Order issued for Water District #1, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) officially approved the start of the 60 day clock for the required chlorine burn. Approval was based on obtaining a 1.0 mg/l chlorine residual at seventy DHH approved sites. These sites include fire hydrants, water faucets, hose bibs, sampling stations, etc. at residences, businesses, and commercial sites in Water District #1. The official start date of the chlorine burn was Thursday, September 18, 2014.
The Utilities Department, Fire Department, and third party consultants will conduct sampling at all seventy sites once per week to ensure they are at or above 1.0 mg/l of free chlorine. Daily samples at the Point of Entry (POE) and the Maximum Resident Time (MRT) will continue to be recorded and submitted to DHH for all three water systems.
In previous cases in Louisiana, the 60 day chlorine burn has been effective in controlling the ameba. DHH will sample the system again for presence of the ameba at the end of the 60 day period.
As a reminder, the water is safe for consumption, but residents may continue to notice a change in the smell and taste of the water. If there are any questions, please call the Emergency Operations Center at 985-652-2222 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. While the water remains safe for consumption, there is a risk associated with water entering the nasal passage. It is imperative that residents take precautions to prevent this from happening.
