Council Amends Grass and Junked/Derelict Vehicle Ordinances

Thursday, April 3, 2014

The Parish Council recently amended two ordinances to address grass and junked/derelict vehicle violations. Both ordinances were strenghtened by the amendments and will result in the issuance of more violations to residents and property owners by Code Enforcement Officers.

Ordinance 14-04 was amended to replace the permitted height of grass and weeds from 12 inches to 10 inches. Property owners must maintain grass and weeds at 10 inches on all properties. “This reduction in grass height from 12 inches to 10 inches will allow us to get a jump start on the process and provide much needed relief to our residents sooner,” said Councilwoman Jaclyn Hotard.

The amendment to Ordinance 14-05 reduces the required notification period to owners of junked/derelict vehicles on public property from 3 days to twenty-four hours. Code Enforcement Officers may tag such vehicles on public property for removal by the owner within 24 hours of the notice or the vehicle will be towed by the Parish.

Both ordinances were sponsored by Councilwoman Jaclyn Hotard to improve the value of homes and neighborhoods as well as the quality of life in St. John Parish. While both were existing ordinances, the amendments put more stringent requirements on residents and property owners.
