The National Weather Service detected a line of strong thunderstorms moving East that is expected to affect St. John the Baptist Parish and the surrounding area late this morning and during the afternoon hours.
Although severe weather is not expected, the primary threat from these storms will be short periods of locally heavy rainfall that could result in ponding of water in low-lying roadways. Heavy rain will greatly reduce visibility along portion of Interstate 10, Interstate 12, and Interstate 55. Drivers should use caution when on the road and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility.
These storms are also capable of producing high wind gusts. As a result, residents are encouraged to clear yards of any loose materials and stay indoors. Public Works and Utilities crews will be on hand in the event issues arise with drainage and utility systems. Residents are asked to call the 9-1-1 Emergency Center to report any issues or concerns during the weather event.
