Firefighter Civil Service Exam

One of the first steps toward becoming a firefighter is successfully passing a civil service examination which is administered by the Office of the State Examiner for Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service.  You do not need to already have a knowledge of firefighting in order to pass the firefighter examination.  The test is designed to evaluate knowledge, skills, and abilities that are needed in order to learn the job of firefighting.  For example, in order to successfully complete firefighter training, you must be able to read and comprehend material on firefighting procedures.  Therefore, part of the written test contains a section of questions on reading comprehension based upon material that is quite like the material that must be read on the job during your training period.

A booklet is available on the State Examiner’s Website that will provide you with important information about the examination process, some helpful hints on taking tests, and a practice test with questions that are similar to those that are actually on the firefighter exam.  This website also contains information on testing dates and locations, applications, job descriptions, and the like.

~The “Application for Competitive Examination”  is submitted to the St. John Fire Civil Service Board.

This is not a job application.

~A separate “St. John the Baptist Parish Employment Application” must be submitted to the St. John Office of Fire Services/Human Resources for consideration for employment.
