Welcome to St. John Parish

St. John Parish, Louisiana

St. John Parish is a suburb of the city of New Orleans that is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and Lake Ponchartrain. The parish is a mixture of growing suburban community, business development,  rural farm land and pristine nature.

The fertile land of St. John provided food that insured the early survival on New Orleans. Today, the parish serves as a suburban community of New Orleans. LaPlace is the largest and fastest growing community in St. John, and is located at the intersection of Interstates 10 & 55, and is only 25 minutes away from downtown New Orleans. LaPlace is known for it Andouille Sausage and every October the Andouille Festival is held to celebrate this tasty sausage that is a necessity if you are going to have a good gumbo or Jambalaya.

The communities of Reserve, Garyville and Mt. Airy line the East Bank of the Mississippi River. Each year on Christmas Eve these small towns become tourist destinations as people come to view the traditional Celebration of the Bonfires, the building of teepee shaped fires that line the Mississippi River.  On the west bank of the Mississippi River, lie the communities of  Wallace,  Lucy and Edgard. The parish courthouse is located in Edgard.

Along the River Road you will find San Francisco Plantation, a beautifully maintained piece of American history. Just across the river in Wallace is Evergreen Plantation, which is now open to the public. Guided Tours are available for both plantations.

If you prefer the wilder side, St. John is abundant in natural scenery and activities. With some of the most pristine wetlands in the country, St. John is a sportsman's paradise. Swamp tours are available.

Visit us and you'll soon discover what we already know -- that St. John Parish is a great place to live, work, do business or simply enjoy the pleasures of life.
