Interstates
The major highways which traverse St. John Parish are Interstate Highways 10 and 55, which intersect at LaPlace. I-10 runs East-West, connecting opposite coasts of the United States. I-55 runs North-South, connecting New Orleans and Chicago.
U.S. Highways
US-51 connects I-10 and I-55 to US 61, also known as Airline Highway, an alternate route between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. US 61 runs East-West through the northern portion of the parish.
LA Highways
The River Roads, LA-18 on the west bank of the Mississippi River and LA-44 on the east bank of the river, are also major transportation routes in the parish. The Veterans Memorial Bridge connects the east and west banks.
Ports
The Port of South Louisiana is one of the largest ports in total tonnage handled. The port encompasses a sprawling 54-mile stretch of the lower Mississippi River above the Gulf of Mexico. Its deep water location on the Mississippi River is at the jurisdiction of the inland river system, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, the national railroad system, an international airport, interstate highways and major oil and gas pipeline distribution. This versatile, all-purpose combination of water, ground and air transportation is capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding manufacturer or shipper.
In addition, the Port of South Louisiana and the Port of New Orleans are both located in the Foreign Trade Zone and boast a 45 foot draft on the Mississippi River. (The Port of New Orleans is located approximately 20 miles from St. John Parish.)
Pipelines
Six major oil and gas pipelines serve the Port of South Louisiana, which is the terminus for the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), the nation's only offshore oil super-port, located 15 miles (24 kilometers) off the Louisiana coast. LOOP provides over 500,000 barrels of crude oil daily through a 48-inch (122 centimeter) pipeline.
The region is also the originating point for Capline, a 40-inch (101 centimeter) 640-mile (1,030 kilometer) interstate pipeline that carries an average of 800,000 barrels of oil daily from Louisiana to the middle of the United States.
Railways
There are four major rail lines that serve the parish, two of which are located on the east bank (north) of the Mississippi River, and two on the west bank (south of the river):
• Kansas City Southern (KCS)
• Canadian National (CN)
• Union Pacific (UP)
• Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF)
